Pharma Nord | Aranesp (Medication)
Aranesp is used to treat anemia – fewer red blood cells in blood than normal – in two groups of patients: adults and children over one year with anemia caused by chronic renal failure; adult patients with certain types of cancer receiving chemotherapy….
Aranesp: Side Effects
The most common side effects when treated with Aranesp are headache, hypertension (high blood pressure), thrombosis (blood clots), injection site pain, arthralgia (pain joint) and peripheral edema (fluid retention). Contact your doctor if you feel weak, light-headed, or short of breath, or if your skin looks pale. These may be signs that your body has stopped responding to darbepoetin alfa.
Aranesp can increase your risk of life-threatening heart or circulation problems, including heart attack or stroke. This risk will increase the longer you use darbepoetin alfa. Seek emergency medical help if you have symptoms of heart or circulation problems, such as: chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling; feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion; sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body; sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance; or pain or swelling in one or both legs….
Aranesp is not in people who may be allergic to darbepoetin alfa or any other component of the drug or to patients with poorly controlled hypertension.
This medicine may increase your risk of having blood clots. This is more likely in patients who use high doses of this medicine. If you have shortness of breath, pain in your legs, or swelling in your legs while using this medicine, call your doctor right away. If you are getting kidney dialysis treatments, tell your doctor right away if you notice blood clots at your injection site.
Also tell your doctor if you start having dizziness, fainting spells, or severe tiredness while using this medicine. These could be symptoms of a serious problem.
In addition to Aranesp, your body needs iron and vitamins to make red blood cells. Your doctor may direct you to take iron or vitamin supplements. Aranesp will not work well if you do not have enough iron or vitamins in your body….
