Cefuroxime: Indications

Cefuroxime is effective against susceptible bacteria, such as lower respiratory tract infections: acute and chronic pneumonia; upper respiratory tract infections: otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis and pharyngitis; genitourinary tract infections: pyelonephritis, cystitis and urethritis, gonorrhea acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis. Skin and soft tissue infections: furunculosis, and impetigo pilodermite.

Additionally, it is useful in treating acute bacterial bronchitis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)….

Cefuroxime: Side Effects

Inform your healthcare provider right away if you have any serious side effects, including: dark urine, easy bruising/bleeding, fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat, seizures, unusual weakness, yellowing eyes/skin, mental/mood changes (such as confusion).

This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea) due to a type of resistant bacteria. Anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications should not be used if you have any of these symptoms because these products may make them worse. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool.

Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection. Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge, or other new symptoms….

Cefuroxime: Precaution

Use of Cefuroxime in patients sensitive to penicillin should be applied under medical supervision and with special care from the first administration because of hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis) observed in these two types of antibiotics can be very serious events, sometimes even fatal.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, liver disease, stomach/intestinal diseases (e.g., colitis).

Kidney function declines as you grow older. This medication is removed by the kidneys. Therefore, elderly people may be at greater risk for side effects while using this drug.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended to use this medicine without your doctor advice….
