Swelling of Scrotum: Description

Scrotal swelling can occur in men at any age. Inflammation can occur in one or both sides, and there may be pain. The testicles and penis may or may not be involved.

Swelling of Scrotum: Causes

Testicular torsion is a serious emergency in which the testicle become twisted in the scrotum and loses its blood supply. If the twisting is not relieved quickly, the testicle may be lost permanently. This condition is extremely painful. It is therefore mandatory to contact a doctor, because the loss of blood supply for only a few hours can cause tissue death and loss of a testicle.

Other causes include: testicular cancer, varicocele (abnormally enlarged veins in the scrotum), orchitis (acute inflammation of the testes), hydrocele (swelling due to increased fluid), hernia, epididymitis (inflammation or infection in the epididymis, at the back of the testicle), congestive heart failure.
