Cisapride: Indications

Cisapride increases the rate at which your esophagus, stomach, and intestines move during digestion. It also increases the rate at which your stomach empties into your intestines and increases the strength of your lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle between your stomach and your esophagus).

Cisapride is used to treat gastric reflux (the regurgitation of stomach acid into the esophagus), which is usually experienced as heartburn….

Cisapride: Side Effects

If you any of the following serious side effects are experienced your doctor should be notified immediately: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); fainting; or fast or irregular heartbeats.

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take cisapride and talk to your doctor if you experience abdominal pain, nausea, or diarrhea; or increased frequency of urination….

Cisapride: Precaution

Discuss with your doctor your medical history, especially of: intestinal or stomach disorders, bleeding ulcers, lung problems, kidney problems, liver disease, heart problems, cancer, certain blood disorders that may be caused by sudden loss of water (electrolyte disorders such as hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia), vomiting, poor diet, eating disorders (e.g., anorexia or bulimia), allergies (especially drug allergies).

Alcohol intake should be limited as it may aggravate drug side effects. Caution is advised when using this drug in children less than 16 years of age because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Since small amounts of this medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding….
