Mouth | Odontologie | Dentures (Disease)
Dentures, which is also known as false teeth, are prosthetic devices constructed to replace the teeth that are missing, and which are supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Conventional dentures are removable, however there are many different denture designs, some which rely on bonding or clasping onto teeth or dental implants. There are two main categories of dentures, depending on whether they are used to replace missing teeth on the mandibular arch or the maxillary arch.
There are four primary types of dentures:
(1) Complete. This type of denture replaces all of the teeth and their adjacent tissues.
(2) Partial. Partial dentures act as dental bridges as they bridge the gap between a missing tooth or teeth.
(3) Conventional. Conventional dentures allow a recovery time (usually four to eight weeks) after all of the teeth are extracted before the dentures are placed in the mouth.
(4) Immediate. This type of denture does not allow a healing period after all of the teeth are removed. The denture is immediately fit into the mouth after all teeth are removed. Additional adjustments in the fitting of this type of denture procedure may be necessary as healing occurs.
Causes and Risk factors
Patients can become entirely edentulous (without teeth) for many reasons, the most prevalent being removal because of dental disease typically relating to oral flora control, i. e. periodontal disease and tooth decay. Other reasons include tooth developmental defects caused by severe malnutrition, genetic defects such as dentinogenesis imperfecta, trauma, or drug use.
Dentures: Treatment and Diagnosis
It is important to look after the dentures. They should be removed before a person goes to bed. They should be cleaned carefully and stored safely in a container of cold water.
A denture that can be used immediately after extractions is a popular treatment choice for many people. In many instances the entire procedure can be completed in one day. Since each patients healing period and ability to accomodate an immediate denture varies, the feeling of being comfortable will be different
